My Story


Hi, and Welcome to The Health Sprout!

I'm Laura Gutierrez, a Certified Holistic Nutritionist and Mindfulness Facilitator who is passionate about supporting your cognitive health, helping you reduce anxiety, and become the best version of you! I understand that everyone has different needs depending on your current health state, resources, cultural background, and life stage. I love the diversity and aim to make healthy eating and living accessible and realistic for all, not to mention delicious and educational!

I graduated from The University of Toronto with a double major in English Literature and Anthropology, and a few years later went on to study Holistic Nutrition at IHN, or The Institute of Holistic Nutrition. I also hold a Mindfulness Facilitator certificate from Mindfulness Without Borders.

So, why did I become interested in nutrition and mindfulness? (Good question!)

It started when I was diagnosed with epilepsy at the age of 12. I was scared, confused, and anxious, as was the rest of my family who had never heard of epilepsy or seizure disorders. For many years I struggled while coping with a condition which is said to be chronic. I was put on medications which had side effects and made me feel even more anxious and depressed.

Thankfully, I found a medication which did work for me and controlled my seizures, something I am eternally grateful for. However, even though I eventually found an amazing neurologist who cared about me as a person, the type of medicine being practiced was not holistic. The amount of time allotted to me was minimal, and the care was more about getting me to take medication rather than addressing the root cause of the issue. 

I understand medical professionals only have a limited amount of time due to their vast demand, but I felt like many other parts of me were being ignored, and my emotional and spiritual health was not addressed. 

I decided to take matters into my own hands and take control of my health. The first step was learning more about nutrition, and which foods could help me heal. I finally decided to  quit my full time job and went to study Holistic Nutrition full time! Since changing my diet, beginning to meditate, and adapting a few other modalities, my health and life has improved greatly. 

I know that healing is multidimensional which is why I have many tools to help you heal, including:

  • Lifestyle practices for stress management

I am so grateful to say I have been seizure free for years, and enjoy more mental clarity, and far less anxiety thanks to taking control of my own health.

Now I want to share my knowledge with you.

Epilepsy ended up being a teacher for me; it led me to my path. Sometimes the hardest times in our lives lead to the most growth, and I am so grateful to be able to help others through my own lessons in life.
